cant help but think this is sherlock tearing up in his car after watching john’s wedding ceremony
You just know that when John gets married he’d not going to have a best man. He’ll leave the seat open, just in case. He might in a moment of weakness ask Greg but you know that he’ll refuse. Because that job was and always will be Sherlock’s. So John will have his wedding, happy to be married but still with a part of him always hoping that he’ll sweep in with some derisive comment and take the space saved for him.
It’s going to be the same at Christmases, a space always saved for dinner, a present always saved under the tree just in case. It’ll be the same for his birthday, any important family event. Family being the key word. Family means that no-one is left behind, even if they are the one who left.
